The euro zone’s economic prospects have deteriorated over the last week amid the fiancial crisis, but inflation remains a concern for the European Central Bank, ECB Governing Council member Guy Quaden said on Friday.

“Of course, the economy will be affected by the financial crisis … Perspectives for economic activity have deteriorated over the last week,” he told Belgian radio RTBF in an interview.

Quaden, who is the Belgian central bank’s governor, said recent falls in prices of primary materials was good news, but inflation “remains a concern for the ECB.”

He added financial markets often “exaggerate” in their reactions to events in the real economy.
