Euro zone retail sales fell 0.6 percent in June from May, and were down 3.1 percent year-on-year, EU statistics office Eurostat said.

Economists polled by Thomson Financial News had forecast a month-on-month fall of just 0.4 percent and a decline of 1.1 percent from a year earlier.

Month on month, Eurostat said food, drinks and tobacco decreased by 0.4 percent in the euro area, while the non-food sector fell by 0.6 percent.

From a year earlier, food, drinks and tobacco fell by 4.4 percent in the euro area and the non-food sector declined by 2.2 percent.
